How Does It Feel to Come Home to Yourself?
Learn some simple techniques to help get back to you.
By Temple Schauble, Metta Yogaβs Co-Owner & Yoga Instructor
After all the activity, travel and busyness of summer, we can sometimes feel a little disconnected... almost as though our body is back home, but our mind hasn't quite caught up with us. I love the summer, but I often find myself getting out of my routines.
As we move towards the fall, we hear about Homecoming as a welcome back to school but it can also mean returning back home to a familiar place, a personal homecoming.
Coming home to yourself requires letting go of external demands and focusing on your own wellbeing, and it can be challenging to do this with everything that's going on around us. But it's part of a lifelong practice of listening to what you really need and how you want to live, and making small adjustments to feel more in alignment.
This month at Metta, I'll be teaching a workshop on personal Homecoming with some simple techniques to help you find your way back to yourself. Reconnection, solitude and acceptance are the building blocks for this practice and together we'll explore embodied ways to access these states more easily.
We'll begin by simply reconnecting with our breath, moving through some gentle yoga stretches to feel into our mind, body and breath connection --- it's always there inside of us but sometimes gets away from us. From there, we'll explore a short walking meditation β a slow individually paced walk back and forth without a destination, it's surprising how this simple practice can bring about so much ease for the mind and body. By doing this, we also experience solitude as a way of intentionally stepping away in a way that feels deliberate, peaceful and reflective, rather than 'lonely'.
Finally, we'll move into a guided seated meditation to help integrate these practices and bring awareness and acceptance to whatever might be calling your attention. As you become more present, you'll become more able to empty your mind, allowing fresh energy and creativity to flow. This is where inspiration and intuition arise, and you find a new way of being in your body.
If you'd like to navigate your way through the change in seasons with a little more ease and joy, please join me for the Homecoming Workshop, on Saturday, September 19th from 1.30-3pm at our San Rafael studio.
About Temple:
Temple is an owner of Metta Yoga and also offers regular weekly Flow + Restore classes at the San Rafael studio on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10.45am.
As a 20-year yoga practitioner and teacher for ten years, Templeβs mission is to offer a yoga and breath practice that will help her students reduce levels of stress, cultivate inner peace and create space for more joy in their lives. Her teaching is based on a blend of styles, including an alignment-based methodology and the mind-body-breath integration of Kripalu Yoga Center, where she did her teacher training. She joined the studio as a Co-owner in 2020. In addition to teaching, Temple has enjoyed having the opportunity to work with community members, teachers and students at all three studios. She has experienced first-hand the importance of practicing yoga for well-being and this inspires her to share the benefits of this practice with her students. Her classes move between smoothly flowing poses to build stamina and strength and end with more restorative poses to open and rebalance the body.
